Traditional Uses
The name is derived from the arabic al-fac-facah, meaning 'father of all foods' and the herb been used by the Chinese since the sixth century to treat kidney stones, and to relieve fluid retention and swelling.
This versatile herb is also a folk remedy for arthritis, diabetes, asthma, hay fever, and is reputed to be an excellent appetite stimulant and overall tonic.
Current uses
Alfalfa acts as a laxative and a natural diuretic. It is acknowledged as a detoxifier, able to cleanse the liver and bloodstream. It is used also in the treatment of urinary tract infections, and kidney, bladder and prostate disorders. It is thought to alkalize and detoxify the body, especially the liver and to promote pituitary gland function.
The leaves of the alfalfa plant are rich in minerals, chlorophyll and vitamins and nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and carotene (useful against both heart disease and cancer). The leaves are also rich in protein, vitamins E and K.
Alfalfa tea is widely used as a health tonic.
