Traditional Uses
Azadirachta Indica (Neem) was widely used in Ayurvedic medicine for its cleansing, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Patents
Interestingly, in 1995, the United States Department of Agriculture and the multinational company WR Grace was actually granted a patent on an anti-fungal product derived from neem despite the fact that the process for which the patent had been granted had actually been in use in India for over 2000 years.
After challenges by the Indian Government and appeals the European Patents Office (EPO) eventually revoked the patent.
Other aspects of neem use continue to be patented, not least in India itself.
Current uses
Most current interest in neem is in its properties as an insect repellent, particularly against malaria carrying mosquitoes. In Africa it has been used as such for centuries
Some evidence shows neem (Azadirachta indica) to be very effective in the treatment of scabies and it is recommended for people sensitive to permethrin , a known insecticide which might be irritant.
Some anecdotal evidence suggests its effectiveness in treating infestations of head lice in humans
