Borage is an herbal medicine used to treat arthritis, eczema (itchy, scratchy, scaly skin), and seborrheic dermatitis (scaly, crusty scalp).

Borage promotes the activity of the kidneys and for this reason is employed to combat feverish catarrhs. Its demulcent qualities are due to the mucilage contained in the whole plant.

Herbalists use borage for regulation of metabolism and the hormonal system, and some consider it to be a good remedy for PMS and menopause symptoms, such as the hot flash .

Borage is sometimes indicated to alleviate and heal colds, bronchitis, and respiratory infections, and in general for its anti-inflammatory and balsamic properties
