Traditional Uses
Traditionally catnip has been long recognised as being antiflatulent and settling to the stomach, often used in cases of colic.
A very weak tea has been administered to infants to relieve gas and symptoms of colic.
It has been thought that catnip may prevent miscarriage and premature birth and relieves symptoms of morning sickness (this use is not recommended - see "precautions and side effects")
Current uses
Catnip is known to be soothing to the nervous system and is calming to the stomach.
As a hot infusion, it brings on sweating and can relieve symptoms of the common cold, flu, fevers, and infectious childhood diseases

Precautions and side effects (refer also to statements below)
Pregnant or breast-feeding women, are or who have condition that could be aggravated by alterations in uterine muscle tone should avoid catnip.
It is generally currently recommended that young children should not take catnip internally
Catnip can cause drowsiness. Consumption of very large amounts of it might cause fatigue, headaches, nausea, or vomiting.
