According to the World Health Organization, about 35 million people in industrialized countries will have Alzheimer's disease by 2010. There has been an increasing interest in recent years in the use of herbal medicines for the treatment of age related brain disorders
In the Americas, Africa, and Asia more than 150 plant species have been identified as having been traditionally used for dementia, and European herbal medicines from the 16th and 17th centuries and traditional Chinese and Indian medicines accounted for the majority of the plants identified. .
A large clinical trial of a ginkgo extract conducted in France over seven years demonstrated a preventive effect against dementia in an elderly population. On the basis of this trial, two large interventional studies have been initiated, one in the United States and one in France, which should prove instrumental in determining the potential role of natural products in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease
