Traditional Uses
Guelder Rose, or Cramp Bark, as its name implies, was originally used to relieve cramps, including menstrual cramps, muscle cramps, and stomach cramps.
Cramp bark was used by native Americans as a diuretic and a sedative.
Current uses
The bark of Guelder Rose has antispasmodic, astringent and sedative properties.
It is known to relax the cardiovascular system and also to relieve nervous tension, often associated with high blood pressure.
It also contains a substance which has a sedative affect on the uterus. A tea may be used internally to relieve all types of spasms, including menstrual cramps, spasms after childbirth and threatened miscarriage It is also used in the treatment of nervous complaints and debility
Guelder Rose is a powerful antispasmodic and is used in the treatment of asthma, cramps and other conditions such as colic or painful menstruation. It is also used as a sedative remedy for nervous conditions
It is used in the treatment of menstrual pain and spasms after childbirth.

Precautions and side effects (refer also to statements below)
There is no published research (that we could find) on the therapeutic properties of cramp bark and no currently reported cases of side effects from cramp bark or reports of interactions between cramp bark and any other drug or herbal medicine.
Some sources state that the berries of cramp bark are toxic and should not be eaten.
