Traditional Uses

Juniper, from ancient times, has symbolised protection. In medievil Europe juniper wood was burned to thwart evil spirits.

It was regarded , medically as a "resistor of pestilence" and offered protection against "the biting of venomous beasts".

Juniper was used to flavour gin and the word gin in fact derives from an abbreviation of the Dutch word for juniper, jenever

Current uses

The berries of juniper are recogised as being antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.

The berries are regarded as useful against rheumatism, gout arthritis and colic.

In cuisine, juniper berries are a common ingredient of pickles and chutneys.

Juniper berries should not be given to pregnant women as they are a uterine stimulant.

They are also not to given to people with kidney problems
