Traditional Uses

Licorice Root has been used by nearly all ancient civilisations for a variety of medical and non medical purposes, and was highly valued, in conjunction with other herbs, to promote vitality.

It has been used as a cough remedy since ancient times, especially in ayurvedic medicine where it is also used in tooth powders .

Current uses

Licorice is a source of magnesium, silicon and thiamine.

It is currently used to alleviate a variety of conditions including digestive problems, constipation, depression, fatigue, kidney and liver problems, arthritis, asthma, and sore throat.

Professional herbalists value licorice as a demulcent (soothing, coating agent) and use it to relieve a variety of conditions including respiratory ailments (such as allergies, bronchitis, colds, sore throats, and tuberculosis), stomach problems (including, possibly, heartburn from reflux or some other cause and gastritis), inflammatory disorders, skin diseases, and liver problems.

Licorice root is often used in the prevention and treatment of stomach ulcers. A synthetic form of licorice available in Europe and Japan is often prescribed for stomach ulcers. In the United States, many herbalists prescribe combination herbal remedies containing licorice for people with stomach ulcers.

Overdoses are said to cause high blood pressure, headaches, fatigue, even heart attacks. It may also cause oedema resulting from water retention.

Research

Research has found that preparations containing glycyrrhizin (an active compound in licorice) may be as effective commonly prescribed anti-ulcer medications for pain relief and recurrance prevention of stomach ulcers.

In one study, 100 patients with stomach ulcers (of which 86 had not improved from conventional medication) were treated with licorice root fluid extract for 6 weeks. The ulcers in 22 of these patients totally disappeared and ninety percent of patients improved
