Traditional Uses
Amazonian natives use traditional remedies prepared with muira puama roots for treating various central nervous system conditions, including those associated with aging.
Current uses
Muira Puama is listed in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia, a source on herbal medicine from the British Herbal Medicine Association, and is recommended for the treatment of dysentery and impotence. The bark and roots are used in herbal treatments.
Although many people are skeptical about herbal sexual stimulants the muira puama herb is acknowledged in Europe to be effective in assisting in increasing sexual desire as well as attaining and maintaining an erection.

There are no commonly reported side effects.
Research
In a study in France in 1990 with 262 patients with low libido demonstrated muira puama extract to be effective. Within two weeks, at a daily dose of 1 to 1.5 grams of muira puama 4:1 extract, 62% of the patients claimed that the treatment was helpful
The same Institute in 2000 carried out a similar study which clearly demonstrated an improvement in sexual activity, interest and satisfaction.| |
