Traditional Uses

Traditionally, decoction of Shepherd's Purse has been used to treat haemorrhoids, haematuria, chronic diarrhcea and dysentery, and locally as a vulnerary in nose-bleeding, by inserting the juice on cotton-wool.

It has also been used in rheumatic disorders, and has been found curative in various uterine haemorrhages, especially those associated with which uterine cramp and colic.

Current uses

Shepherd's purse is used to stop heavy bleeding, particularly from the uterus. It is used to reduce heavy menstrual periods, and to treat postpartum hemorrhage.

It is effective for the treatment of chronic uterine bleeding disorders, such as that resulting from the presence of a fibroid tumor.
Shepherd's purse has also been used internally to treat blood in the urine and bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract.

Shepherd's purse action is to constrict blood vessels, thereby reducing blood flow and is also thought to cause the uterine muscle to contract, further reducing bleeding.

Herbalists also use the herb topically for eczema and rashes of the skin.
