Traditional Uses

It is thought that Native Americans used ground willow bark and bark steeped for tea to relieve pain and fever generally

Current uses

The active ingredient in white willow is salicin, which the body converts into salicylic acid. As a result white willow bark is commonly referred to as "herbal aspirin”

Salicin from willow does not cause gastric or intestinal upset or bleeding as aspirin can, This is because willow does not block prostaglandins in the stomach or intestines

White willow bark is therefore effective in relieving acute and chronic pain, including headache, muscle aches, back and neck pain, and menstrual cramps

White willow bark has been used by herbalists to reduce swelling and inflammation in arthritis sufferers , and consequently increase mobility, in the back, knees, hips, and other joints
