Traditional Uses
Milfoil is a very ancient herb and has been found in Neanderthal graves in Iraq.
The French word millesfeuilles referred to the feathery look of Yarrow, and this eventually became the English word, Milfoil.
It is said that Achilles used milfoil to arrest the blood flow from his wounded soldiers during the Battle of Troy.
Current uses
Milfoil, also commonly known as Yarrow is diaphoretic, astringent, tonic, stimulant and mild aromatic and is used to treat arthritis, colds and fevers. It is also used to treat hypertension and lack of appetite
Milfoil is a general tonic for the cardio-vascular system and helps to lower blood pressure
Milfoil has also been used to ease menstruation.
For severe colds, yarrow tea is most effective, particularly if used at the commencement of the fever, and if perspiration is obstructed. It opens the pores freely and purifies the blood, and is recommended in the early stages of children's colds, and in measles and other eruptive diseases. It is made with 1 oz. of dried herb to 1 pint of boiling water, drunk warm, in wineglassful doses. It may be sweetened with sugar, honey or treacle, and a little Cayenne Pepper.
A decoction of the whole plant is useful for bleeding piles, and for kidney disorders.
